General Labor Well-Being in Latin American Dentists during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

This study aimed to determine the general labor well-being of Latin American dentists according to sociodemographic characteristics during the COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional study was conducted in a final sample of 2214 participants from 11 countries. A validated online questionnaire on general work well-being was used (data collection period from 1 June to 10 July 2021), containing two dimensions: psychosocial well-being and collateral effects. The sociodemographic characteristics of the dentists and their perception of the economic impact of the pandemic were also recorded. A multivariate linear regression analysis was performed (hierarchical regression model) to evaluate the joint effect of the explanatory variables on labor well-being and the changes in the variance between each model. A score of psychosocial well-being of 233.6 + 40.2 and collateral effects of 45 + 20.1 was found. Psychosocial well-being was associated with sex, country of origin, academic training achieved, type of dental activity, and perceived impact during the pandemic (p < 0.05). Somatization was frequently manifested through back pain (88.2%) and muscular tensions (87.2%). Women, those who worked 41 or more hours and had between 1 to 15 years of professional experience presented a greater collateral effect (p < 0.001). The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic a year and a half after it began on the labor well-being of Latin American dentists was evidenced with important interactions with social characteristics.

Carcinoma verrucoso en lengua de paciente geriátrica. Informe de caso clínico / Verrucous carcinoma in the tongue of a geriatric patient. Clinic case report

Resumen Se informa el caso de un paciente femenino de 80 años de edad, la cual presenta un crecimiento exofítico en el borde lateral izquierdo de la lengua con dolor a la masticación y deglución de alimentos y bebidas; es referida por el odontólogo del Hospital Primario del municipio de Villanueva, departamento de Chinandega, Nicaragua, al área de Diagnóstico en Patología Bucal de la Facultad de Odontología de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Nicaragua, León (UNAN-León). A la exploración clínica se observa lesión exofítica en la zona posterior del borde lateral izquierdo de la lengua de aspecto papilomatoso, y ocupa además el reborde alveolar del mismo lado. El diagnóstico definitivo histopatológico fue carcinoma verrucoso.

Abstract We report the case of an 80-year-old female patient, who presents an exophytic growth on the left lateral border of the tongue with pain when chewing and swallowing food and drinks; who is referred by the Dentist of the Primary Hospital of the municipality of Villanueva, department of Chinandega, Nicaragua to the area of Oral Pathology Diagnostics of the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua, Dental School León (UNAN-León). An exophytic lesion was observed in the posterior area of the left lateral border of the papillomatous aspect of the tongue, occupying in addition the alveolar ridge on the same side. The definitive histopathological diagnosis was Verrucous carcinoma.

Percepción de la calidad de atención del paciente que acude a las clínicas multidisciplinarias de la Facultad de Odontología, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Nicaragua (UNAN-León), marzo- agosto de 2016

El propósito de este estudio fue conocer la visión del usuario de las clínicas multidisciplinarias de la Facultad de Odontología, UNAN-León, acerca de calidad de atención, su perspectiva sobre aspectos organizacionales y de estructura, con la intención de la búsqueda de la satisfacción y seguir liderando en la Odontología en Nicaragua. El estudio realizado fue transversal cualicuantitativo, en el periodo marzo-agosto del año 2016. Los sujetos de estudio se eligieron con base en los criterios: participación voluntaria, facilidad de comunicación verbal, haber sido atendido durante el periodo del estudio y que hayan cumplido con su programa de citas. Participaron 43 individuos:12 en grupos focales y 31 con entrevistas estructuradas. Se entrevistó a 2 docentes para triangular la información cualitativa. Los datos cualitativos fueron procesados en el programa estadístico Nvivo versión 11 y, los cuantitativos, en el SPSS versión 21. Es interesante advertir que el grupo estudiado se mostró muy satisfecho con la atención prestada, a pesar de las limitaciones de estructura y organización en las clínicas; su percepción se fundamentó en la calidad de atención, en la ética profesional del estudiante y en la resolución del problema dental que lo aquejaba.

The purpose of this study was to let us know the user´s vision of the Multidisciplinary Clinics of the Faculty of Dentistry, UNAN-León about the quality of care, its perspective on organizational and structure aspects, withthe intention of finding satisfaction and continue leading in dentistry in Nicaragua. The study was transversal Quali-Quantitative, in the period of March-August of the year 2016. The study subjects were chosen based on the criteria: voluntary participation, ease of verbal communication, having been attended during the study period and had fulfilled its appointment program. 43 individuals participated: 12 in focus groups and 31 with structured interviews. Two professor were interviewed to triangulate qualitative information. The qualitative data were processed in he statistical program Nvivo version 11 and quantitative in the SPSS version 21. It is interesting underline that the group studied was very satisfied with the attention given despite the limitations of structure and organization in the clinics; based on its perception of quality of care, in the professional ethics of the student and in the resolution of the dental problem the afflicted it.
